We will mention only three beaches on Lanai. Only the first one is suitable for swimming and snorkeling but we list the others because they are suitable for sun bathing and walks if you like to explore and have some solitude. Hulopo'e
Beach Polihua Beach This is a spectacular, long, white-sand beach with excellent views of Molokai. It is located on the northwest shore of the island about 11 miles from Lanai City (past Garden of the Gods). You will need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get there which results in very few people visiting it. Swimming is dangerous because of strong currents, but it's great for strolling along the beach or picnicking. Shipwreck Beach (also known as Kaiolohia Beach) This is an eight mile long beach on the north shore 10 miles north of Lanai City. It is unsuitable for swimming and has no rest rooms or showers. From the beach you will see a wrecked cargo ship resting on a reef between Lanai and Maui. It is reported to be a good place for beach combing, but the portion of the beach we visited was very rocky with very little sand which made it slow walking. |
