This Week's Hawaii Vacation Planning Tip
The Big Island's Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Reopens
We almost hesitate to write about this, because it's a place we can't afford to stay, but to us it's the best of the best on the Big Island. The hotel sustained major damage in the October 2006 earthquake and has been closed since then.  Since then a $150 million dollar repair and renovation has been completed.  Although the official reopening isn't until March 25 - 29, 2009 they are partially open now. This hotel fronts one of the two best beaches on the Island with a wide expanse of golden sand, and good swimming and snorkeling. We stayed there once in the past, but with the major renovation just completed, the accommodations are even more luxurious than they were before (and they were excellent then) and the prices have risen accordingly. So, if you have a very special occasion coming up and can afford $375 per night (if there are specials) or more, consider staying here. We found the service to be exceptional, the restaurants very good, and the location unexcelled. Click here for more information.
